Sagri
Located 12 km southeast of Chora, the capital and main port of Naxos, Sangri sits atop a hill in the central region of the island. Comprising two smaller villages, Ano (Upper) Sangri and Kato (Lower) Sangri, with a short distance separating them, the settlement derives its name from Saint Crox, the former name of the Holy Cross Monastery, now recognized as Bazeos Tower.
In line with the architectural style prevalent in Naxos’s mountain villages, Sangri preserves its medieval charm, distinct from the Cycladic layout typical of coastal settlements.
Ano Sangri is notable for housing a Folklore Museum within the monastery of Agios Eleftherios, which served as a school during the Ottoman era. Additionally, the iconic Bazeos Tower stands prominently in Ano Sangri.
Kato Sangri has earned distinction as a traditional and preserved settlement, home to the remnants of two Venetian towers. Among these, the Palaiologos tower stands in proximity to the Byzantine church of Panagia Orfani, adding to the historical allure of the village.
