Apollonas
Situated on the northeastern coast of Naxos, Apollonas is a charming fishing village located 36 km from the island’s capital. Its name pays homage to Apollo, the Olympian deity associated with light and music, and it has been inhabited since ancient times. Notably, Apollonas’ port served as a vital hub for exporting fine marble quarried from the region to various destinations.
In close proximity to the village lies the striking Kouros of Apollonas, a partially completed statue measuring 10.5 meters in length, dating back to the 6th century BC. ach year, on June 28th, Apollonas hosts the Fisherman’s Festival, drawing residents from across Naxos who gather to partake in the festivities.
The celebration commences with vespers at the Agios Ioannis church, followed by a blessing of the boats and waters by the priest. Traditional music sets the tone for the event, accompanied by an abundance of fresh fish and seafood.
The village features a quaint sandy beach, flanked by a selection of taverns, cafes, tourist shops, and a mini-market, providing amenities for both locals and visitors alike.
