Melanes
Melanes, situated 8 km southeast of Chora, stands as one of Naxos’s oldest villages. Perched at an altitude of 63 meters, it is home to approximately 500 permanent residents whose primary livelihoods revolve around cattle breeding and agriculture. Legend has it that the village derives its name from a fateful sibling conflict: two brothers vied for control of Naxos and met their demise near the site of the present-day Agios Georgios church. Their sister, in mourning, decreed they be clad in melanas chitonas (black tunics), henceforth lending the village its moniker, Melanes.
A short stroll from Melanes leads to Flerio, where an imposing Kouros statue, towering 6.4 meters in height, lies amidst olive trees. This monumental figure, believed to depict either a mortal man or the god Dionysus, remains in situ, while nearby stands a similar Kouros dating back to the 7th century. Visitors to Flerio can also explore the entrance to the ancient aqueduct of Naxos.
Located 2 km from Melanes is the Jesuit Monastery of Kalamitsa, nestled amid lush vegetation and once serving as a refuge for monks seeking solitude. Though its original grandeur remains evident, caution is advised as the monastery has yet to undergo restoration. Scattered throughout the vicinity of Melanes are numerous towers, once the residences or summer retreats of medieval nobility.
The village’s focal point is the Agioi Apostoloi church, commemorated annually on June 29th with a vibrant three-day celebration featuring music, culinary delights, and libations. Melanes beckons hiking enthusiasts, with many trails originating from Chora and winding through picturesque valleys, quaint settlements, and ancient landmarks en route to the village.
