Chalki
Halki, also known as Chalki, is situated in the heart of the Tragea region, the largest olive cultivation area in the Cyclades, approximately 16 km from Naxos Town. With a storied past, Halki once served as the capital of Naxos, functioning as its primary administrative and commercial hub. The village’s rich history is reflected in its array of neoclassical residences and structures, attesting to its former prosperity and influence.
Scattered throughout the area are several well-preserved Venetian towers and exquisite Byzantine churches, including the 9th-century Panagia Protothrone Church, adorned with splendid Byzantine and post-Byzantine frescoes. A short journey from the main street leads to the remarkable Agios Georgios Diasoritis Church, showcasing exemplary Byzantine architecture amidst the backdrop of olive groves.
Within the village, notable landmarks include the Gratsia Tower, bearing the insignia of its aristocratic founders and serving as a defensive lookout during pirate incursions. Nearby stands the Markopolitis Tower, distinguished by its unique architectural style, diverging from the conventional Venetian design. At the heart of Halki lies the Vallindras distillery, offering complimentary tours showcasing the production process of the renowned Kitron liqueur, derived from citron leaves.
